Representation in our Music Video
For our music video, we always wanted to have a message impeded into it, whether that be directly or indirectly. We want to create music video where at the end of the video you feel something that moves you to feel a certain way or do a certain thing.
With this, we thought about the messages we would like to portray.
We though about:
- Young love
- Relationships
- Society
- The status quo and many other things.
These didn't stand out that much to us until we came up with freedom and liberation. With this idea came feelings such as entrapment and feeling caged in certain scenarios. Scenarios such as school or uncomfortable spaces. We ran with this idea and ended up coming up with that moment in everyone's life when you just don't care anymore. We have all been there, we have all lived through that and if not we wish to someday feel like that.
As part of Generation Z and part of the age group that we are trying to target, I have noticed that we tend to care tremendously about what everyone thinks, in some cases more than ourselves or those voting for us. I see this as an issue because we make life decisions based on other peoples opinions. We chose degrees because of what our friendship circle thinks, we do things because we are afraid of not fitting in and sticking out too much, and the media and many things that influence us to support this idea. Watching TV these days has shown me where many teens get these ideas from. Society has made it ok to disregard individuality and value uniformity even when it comes to authenticity and opinion. in this day and age, where everything is manipulated and used to its greatest advantage of manipulation. Social Media also plays a massive part in the loss of individuality as it has popularised material things and made these things seem elite and better than the rest in order to convince vulnerable teens into buying into it. Because of this we chose o tackle this issue and try to portray it in the most teen-friendly way possible.
In terms of our target audience, we noticed that they tend not to take criticism very well so we wanted to make the message as subtle as possible in order not to scare off our audience. This also worked because we made our music video concept based, so the point would be subtle regardless.
The image we intend of portraying of our generation is a positive one. Because of the way that we have seen our generation being portrayed in the media we decided to change that image and set a different tone than the one that has been popularised in the media. we intend on still including stereotypical things about our generation such as mobile phones and a contemporary fashion sense but portray different behaviour. we decided to do this because we also didn't want to represent an inauthentic version out audience. we wanted to make the video as relatable as possible but also as realistic and as clear as possible. The stereotypical image of our audience or generation z is very negative. We are represented as violent, uneducated, rebellious, ill-mannered and unruly. The reality of this is that, yes, a lot of them to go by this stereotype especially in the UK but most youths are not like this stereotype. we wanted to represent those that aren't part of that group and that paves the way for the generation after us. We wanted to give them an aspirational image to see in order to spark change within our generation.
By creating a positive image for young people the artist appeals to both parents and young people. meaning that they gain more credibility, popularity and eventually higher status and a higher platform. This greatly benefits both the artist and the audience.
