Overlays: Creation and Explanation

Stage 2 + 3

Planning:

We used overlays in our music video because we wanted to give a sense of doodles and almost a diary feeling to our video. The idea to use overlays came from a couple music videos, movies and just simple images we had seen on Pinterest. The idea to implement it into our music video came out of the blue when we were talking about what we thought could be cool to add and we thought of that and gave ourselves the challenge to achieve it. At the end of it, my partner (Ruby) drew these doodles and scanned them into the computer. With that, she used Photoshop to make them PNGs and from there we began adding them to our music video.

There were many mock-ups of how we could use it. some were black and white, others were colourful, but from all the versions we learnt a lot and ended up thinking of doing a focus group to help us decide which they would have preferred without showing the real footage.

Stage 1: Is planning what illustrations we were going to feature.

Stage 2: Then she began by drawing the doodles on a piece of plain paper.

Stage 3: After this, she scanned the pages into the computer and after that she used photoshop to remove their backgrounds and turn them into PNGs, therefore digitalising them and making it easier to use in the video.

WEEKS LATER:

After getting some feedback from teachers, my partner figured we should maybe add some more overlays to have more consistency in our video. She came to this conclusion because most of our shots had overlays but not all of them and this made it look less consistent.

With this information, my partner drew more overlays to see if we could add more to the other shots and not have to repeat them. She did the same process as before to digitalise them.

The document below is how we decided what overlays went where. Planning it out like this made it easier in the creation of the overlays because we could associate the lyrics to the overlays.

Planning is always first:

A COUPLE MORE WEEKS LATER:

This video briefly explains how my partner created an overlay that we thought could be interesting to add as it moved, and it looked very complex and professional. We quite liked the way it looked at the end and we were quite proud of the outcome.

This was created in Photoshop and we later added it to our final video on Final Cut Pro.
This is a video of my partner explaining how she created the digital illustrations and all the different methods she tried to use to ultimately create them.

DISCLAIMER:

I was not very involved in the creation of the digital illustration. My partner was fully in charge of this section and she fully created the digital illustrations that we intended on using later in our music video. She fully succeeded in the creation of the illustrations and she later used photoshop to turn them into PNGs, meaning that this gave them a transparent background, making it easier for us to use them in the video. She was very helpful in this section and, I believe, because of her we were able to use quality illustrations that transmitted the message we intended on giving our audience. The illustrations also successfully merged the visuals, the music and the lyrics, which is exactly what we wanted to do.

I gave her many ideas for what she could draw for the doodles, but I was not part of the actual creation and the editing process to get them to PNGs.

FAILURES:

My partner was not completely successful in the creation of the overlays. she tied to use thread to create the overlays, and this was not very easy nor was it successful. this video is a better explanation of her explaining how she got to that conclusion and how she went about trying to create the overlays.
