Practice Video: Music Video 3

All Night: Chance the Rapper

This music video was:

  • Filmed on an iPhone 7+
  • Edited on Wondershare Filmora and VSCO Cam to touch up the videos and add filters and other effects.

Narrative;

This music video has no narrative. This music video is concept based, meaning that it has no narrative or storyline. It also means that the narrative of the music video may be different to the song. This also means that the video has nothing to do with the song and can be seen as two stand-alone pieces and as one piece too.

The idea behind this music video was that the actress was expressing her interior feeling to the outside world. She is finally stepping outside her shell to show the world what is really going on in her head; She is finally liberated by the restraints that society has placed on her. From the beginning of the video, she is seen guarding herself and refraining from expressing herself fully but towards the end, we see her finally opening her mind up to the possibilities the world has for her. It's almost like she has an aha moment when she realises all the opportunities she has missed. At this point, she becomes a changed person. Through this transformation we see her gaining character, motivation and drive to do what she wishes and

To some extent, the video and the song correlate but overall they are separate pieces. The video and the song correlate where certain parts fall into each other, such as the part where the song goes, "...you just want to spill fries on the seat, sprite on the seat...", and a pack of McDonald's fries pop up and a can of soda pops up just as the song says. These parts where added symbolically to add some meaning and correlation to the video. This gave the song some recognition and made it less of something to be ignored but something to be listened to and paid attention to. I believe that by adding symbolic things to the video it loosely binds the video and the song. I do still believe that without the overlays and the song the video could stand alone but with both the song and the overlays the whole projects completely changes.

Design;

Image result for 1980s blue and green fashionThe design choices made in this music video were loosely based on 1980s popular culture.

The opening scene, the transitions and even the water damage filter placed on the video is all loosely based on 1980s popular culture. A lot of what we involved in our video was based on fashion, what was popular at that time, what people mostly remember about that time and all the rest. for example, out inspiration for the title of the song, at the beginning of the video was mainly based on fashion and the heavy saturation of colour in film and in fashion. We wanted the video to begin in a way that set the time and the feeling of the rest of the video, hence the title and the colour. These colours were used to represent the 80s and the intense saturation of, not only colour but also media, specifically MTV. These colours, to me, perfectly represented the way music videos were and it also represented fashion and other forms of media such as film. Film was also a massive industry in the 80s and many films we call classics today were made in the 80s in the same era as MTV and Pop music.

The choice to add a water damage filter on top of the video was due to the fact that we wanted to give the video an aged look. we chose to do this because it gave the video a little more context in terms of the er we were basing it on and the style of the video. Adding the filter I believe made the video opposed to broke the video. I believe it was the final touch that gave it that professional look. This was very lucky as we had actually planned prior to creating the video that we wanted this, so our plans worked out for the best.

The choice to turn the overlays white was a decision made simply due to design decisions. I chose not to keep the colour in the overlay as I found that it distracted from the actual video. I considered the fact that the original focus group suggested we use colour, but I figured the video would have been less effective with coloured overlays. I believe the choice to turn them white/grey was successful as they look like the secondary element making the video the primary. Having the overlays be the secondary elements puts the attention on the video and the song rather than solely the overlays. the compensation for not having coloured overlays was the slightly oversaturated edited filter and the highly saturated title. I believe this made up for the lack of coloured overlays.
