Music Video Preparation: Focus Group with Analysis

Question 1
Firstly, the reason we chose to ask this question because we wanted to add doodles and illustrations, as overlays, to our music video. From the start of this process, we've been planning on using doodles in our music video or at least experimenting with it.

We began by asking them, out of a variety of illustrative styles, which they personally preferred in a music video.

The results show that the most popular illustration was the last one shown in the video also known as the colourful one, on a pink background. Coincidentally this was mine and my partners favourite too. From this result, we found that a lot more people like doodles that pop rather than doodles that are technically intricate. They would rather see something quite colourful, experimental and expressive rather than something technically intricate, such as the first image with the flowers. Even though the other images were very popular, the most popular one will have the most influence on our decisions to do with illustrations from here on out.

Question 2

Our second question asked our selected group about fashion and style. They had a variety of styles to pick from Girlie to Minimalist all the way to Grunge. Styles that are present in the contemporary society.

Our audience clashed when it came to fashion and styles. Overall, most of them preferred the alluring and minimalistic style the most. Those who chose Kylie Jenners’ approach described it as “popular” and “juicy”. Telling us that by choosing this style we are portraying to our audience a character that is relatable and current but also desirable. Others that enjoyed the Minimalistic style more described it as “simple” and “not distracting”. I found this interesting by choosing this style we are choosing to focus our audience on the doodles and the other technical things we add to the video and not the actual character. This could be used quite usefully especially if we, in the future, play around with stop motion we could doodle onto the characters clothing and make something out of that.

Question 3

This question asked our group about filming location. The option was which is the BEST, and which is the WORST. From that information, we distinguished how many liked which locations best and how many disliked which locations worst. We also added and removed some locations for the best and the worst for the pure reason that they would consider them separately. The results are varied therefore when we shoot we will try as many of the suggested locations to please our audiences demands.

Question 4 - Audio

We wanted to ask our audience what they thought of a potential final production song, so we played it to them and asked them what they envisioned when they listened to it. The song is All Night by Chance the Rapper ft. Knox Fortune. We played the instrumental instead of the original because we wanted them to have a clear vision of what they saw while listening to the song instead of letting the lyrics corrupt their ideas.

Responses were mixed but mostly they enjoyed the upbeat nature of the tune and mentioned it reminded them of dance, “house parties” and electronic music.

We’ll take these responses and try to incorporate them into the future video.

Question 5
The last question asked them about album covers, specifically what kind they found more intriguing or which was their favourite.
The album covers differed visually in many ways including:
  • ·        An album cover without the artists' picture
  • ·        An album cover with a pastel colour scheme
  • ·        A photographically innovative album cover
  • ·        An illustrative album cover and
  • ·        An album cover based on the primary colour scheme

Our group seemed to gravitate more towards Star boy and Peach Pit. Even though these are both very different they represent two different kinds of people that we presume will be our audience, so they must be considered. We will try to incorporate elements of these two cover into our own to appeal to a wider audience.
