Planning: The Process of Picking Songs

In the process of my partner and I choosing a song to make our music video to we went through a lot of potential songs.

We started off by listing all our favourite songs. after that we swapped list and chose our top three out of each list and narrowed it down from there.

Out of this process we got the song All Night by Chance The Rapper. It was a song we both immediately connected with. From there we started sharing visions of what we thought the music video could be and we started brainstorming and envisioning where and when we could shoot.

Some of the reasons we didn't choose these songs were because there wasn't much we could do with the song. we didn't have may ideas for the actual video and what it could be. we also wrote some songs off because of the message they carried. some of the songs just didn't convey the kind of message we wanted our audience to listen to. we also chose no to use other songs due to the fact that we had already been corrupted by the actual official video for the song that we no longer had many ideas for it, even though this is not a completely solid reason we wanted to make something completely original and from scratch.

After finally finding the songs we brainstormed and started looking at locations where we could film, why we wanted to film there and when we could film. we also thought of what equipment we would need and whether we would need to lend it from school, buy it or find alternatives to it.

J Cole  – False Prophets - J Coles video for his song “False Prophets” is performed in a very informal way, basically walking through his day showing us, the viewers, a day in his life, in his neighborhood surrounded by everyday encounters. It's filmed in a loose, shaky way as if it were filmed by an amateur. At the beginning of this video the artist, J Cole, is sat on the seat of a bus stop watching out for the bus. The environment he is surrounded by seems familiar according to his calm and natural attitude. The cutaway shots between when Cole raps towards the camera show snippets of children playing, men sitting outside a corner shop, people we suppose he would see on a day to day walk in his neighborhood, we see him taking pictures with fans, standing to rapping outside a house that seems familiar to him. Practice Video: Music Video 1

Mushaboom – Feist (Music Video) In this first attempt at making a full music video learned a lot. I learned: - when to queue a transition and how to add the correct transition - how to edit videos so that it looks like they were all filmed with the same lighting and effects - to match stop in the song to transitions, and finally - to always plan before filing a music video. For this video, we filmed at various locations around London, more specifically Warren Street. it was around 4.30pm in February resulting in an early sunset so when we filmed it was beginning to get dark. by the end of it, the sky was pitch black. Before we met up to film we asked our model to wear dark clothing with a pop of colour with hair braided in one way or another. She kindly agreed, and the look tied in perfectly with the settings we had planned to visit. The reason we asked her to braid her hair was to add an element of culture to the character that we wanted to create.
